During Black History Month, RAW Magazine presents Black History Month: The Unapologetic Series. Every week during February we will highlight influential black figures of the past and present.
Every year we celebrate black history. It’s a time to reflect on all the great things and ideas black people have shared with the world. People such as Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King Jr. are praised for their unbreakable spirit and mind. As we celebrate those who came before us, we also celebrate those who continue to pave the way.
Black history is constantly happening all around us. One person that has been trailblazing consistently is Rihanna. I know what you’re thinking, “Rihanna? All she does is make music and play dress up! How can she be a candidate for such praise?”
The fiery star has proven to have a big heart when it comes down to her people. In 2012, she founded The Clara Lionel Foundation Scholarship Program to aid those who come to the United States to pursue a higher education. Since 2014, Rihanna has thrown her annual Diamond Ball, raising money to support her scholarship program. In one of her speeches, she attributes her grandparents for instilling in her the importance of giving back. Rihanna also offers her support to the Global Partnership for Education and Global Citizen Project.
The Barbados native knows the importance of giving back to where she came from. In September 2017, Rihanna was appointed as an ambassador for Barbados, her core responsibilities including promoting education, tourism and investment for the island, according to a statement from the Barbados Government Information Office. She was awarded for her efforts in 2017, when she received Harvard’s Humanitarian of the Year award.
Rihanna’s influence has grown substantially in recent years in the fashion and beauty industry. She made a very impressive stamp on the cosmetic industry when she dropped her Fenty Beauty makeup line, which included an astonishing 40-shade foundation line. Makeup brands are notoriously known for having limited foundations, making it hard for people of darker shades to choose a color right for them. The makeup world halted for the queen to take her reign, and soon big beauty brands such CoverGirl started to follow suit. Strategically, she took the same approach with her Fenty Savage lingerie brand, making sure to include all shapes and sizes.
Rihanna continues to display strength and test the waters, observing the empty holes and filling them. For years, Rihanna has moved through the public eye with a confidence unmatched and continues to do so while making an impact on the world around her.
